About

Sangeeta Shankar is a world class top ranking Indian Classical violinist.
She is the daughter and disciple of the famed violin virtuoso Padmabhushan Dr. N. Rajam.

She has performed far and wide across the globe and follows the ‘Gayaki’ style – the technique of reproducing the human voice on the violin. With endless improvisation and an amazing left hand technique, she amazes her audience and wins their hearts. She has also passed on the tradition to her daughters Ragini Shankar and Nandini Shankar, and together with husband Shankar Devraj, and son-in-law Mahesh Raghvan, they make a brilliant musical family.

She performs in different genres and also records for Sessions.

Dr. Sangeeta Shankar is a visionary Educator.

Armed with twin Gold medals in B.A. & M.A. and a Ph.D from Banaras Hindu University, she has made educational programmes that impact the society in a big way, both in the Virtual & Physical space.

1999: ‘Swar Sadhana’ – a TV Serial – to educate the masses about Indian Music ( with Madhuri Dixit, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Javed Akhtar, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Jagjit Singh, Naushad, Annu Kapoor, Veena Sahastrabuddhe, Suresh Wadkar, Pankaj Udhas, Shankar Mahadevan, Aruna Sairam, Kanak Rele, Dr. N. Rajam) – now on YouTube under the title ‘Knowledge Series’.

2015 – 2021: Founded & Headed the School of Music in Whistling Woods International with Subhash Ghai creating music directors with an excellent strong foundation in Music. A school continuously growing during her six year tenure, brought out many talented budding musicians who are an asset to the music industry today.

2020 – 2021: ’22 Shrutis Simplified’ – a five part series, is a gold mine for musicians & music students.

2014 – present: Rajam School of Violin – a virtual school for learning the coveted ‘Gayaki Ang’ from the illustrious family of Dr.N.Rajam.

Learn the best technique of reproducing the Indian (Hindustani) vocal style on the violin from the world renowned and highly acclaimed violinist family of Dr. N. Rajam through online classes.

N. Rajam is the pioneer of the revolutionary Gayaki Ang, which highly influenced the whole country to follow suit, so much so that she is now known as the Singing Violin. Coming from a family of traditional musicians, she mastered the Carnatic style at a very young age, and later ventured into the Hindustani style, and made a path-breaking entry through her Gayaki Ang. Apart from being a great performer, Dr. Rajam has also served as a Professor and Dean in Banaras Hindu University for 40 years and has been the recipient of countless awards including one of the highest civilian honours in India, the Padmashri & the Padmabhushan. The courses will be conducted by Dr. N. Rajam, her brother, Narayan Ganesh, her daughter, Dr. Sangeeta Shankar and her grand-daughters, Ragini Shankar and Nandini Shankar, who have trained with her for more than 20 years and been highly lauded and appreciated by audiences worldwide.
